Play Style, Play Symbols and determining a Valid Winning Play for BATTLESHIP

A Play Number is given to each Play, and this can be found at the top right of the Game Play Window.

At the start of a Play, the Player is presented with a Game Play Window displaying two panels (the 'Game Play Squares'), each of which describes one of the following methods of game play: 'REGULAR PLAY GO BY GO, ATTACK YOUR ENEMY'S CRAFT BY FIRING 12 SHOTS TO DESTROY THEIR SHIPS.'

'RAPID PLAY ONE CLICK TO REVEAL ALL OF THE SHOTS & HITS IN ONE VOLLEY OF FLAME & FIRE.'

To start a Play, the Player should click on his chosen Game Play Square. On doing so, the Player is presented with a Game Play Window displaying three square grids (the 'Boards'). Each Board displays five battle ships (the 'Ships') and two mines. To the left and right of each board are displayed the letters from A through to H. Above and below the board are displayed the numbers from 1 through to 8. Below the Boards is the message: 'SELECT A GAME LAYOUT'

To continue a Play the Player should click on his chosen Board. On doing so, the selected Board with the chosen GAME LAYOUT will be displayed. Instructions will appear in the centre of the Game Play Window. After a period of time the instruction will disappear into an 'i' motif (the 'Information Button') which is located to the bottom left of the Game Play Window. The Player can display the instruction at any time by clicking on the Information Button.

In addition to the Ships and the mines on the Board will be a periscope (the 'Submarine') which will move throughout the game. To the right of the Board the 'PRIZE TABLE' (the 'Prize Table') is displayed, which contains six rows. Five of the rows have green representations of the Ships on the board, each split into a number of sections and each with a monetary amount below it (the 'Prize'). One of the rows has a blue and green representation of the Submarine, again split into sections and again with a Prize displayed underneath. To the left of the Board the words 'INSTANT PRIZES' are displayed underneath which are two representations of the mines on the board (the 'Instant Prize Table'), each with a monetary amount below it (the 'Prize'). To the top left of the Game Play Window is the instruction: 'SHOTS LEFT 12' (the 'Shots Left Indicator'). To the bottom of the Game Play Window is a green button with the message: 'TOP DOWN VIEW' (the 'Top Down View Button'). Throughout the Game, if the Player clicks this, a flat version of the Board is displayed and the button's instruction changes to 'CLOSE'. The Player must 'CLOSE' this view in order to continue the Game in the original view. To the left of the Top Down View Button is an orange sonar screen (the 'Spinner') containing the letters A through to H. To the right of the Top Down View Button, is another orange sonar screen (the 'Spinner') containing the numbers 1 through to 8. Above the Top Down View Button is a round red button with 'FIRE' displayed on it (the 'Fire Button'). To the bottom left and the bottom right of the Game Play Window are displayed cannons (each a 'Cannon').

To commence a Play of REGULAR PLAY:

The REGULAR PLAY instruction is: 'CLICK FIRE TO SPIN THE DIALS AND GET YOUR SHOT CO-ORDINATES. SINK AN ENEMY CRAFT TO WIN PLUS COLLECT INSTANT PRIZES.'

The Player must position the cursor over the Fire Button and click. On doing so the following will happen:

- The two Spinners will spin and land on a number and letter giving the co-ordinates on the board, which will be highlighted green. The corresponding row and column on the board will also be highlighted green.

- Either one of the Cannons or a plane will then fire upon that co-ordinate. At the same time the Shots Left Indicator will decrease by one.

- If the shot is a 'hit' (it hits part of a Ship or a mine), the occupied square on the board will turn red and the corresponding section in the Prize Table or Instant Prize Table will also highlight red to show this has been collected. If the periscope was 'hit', the square will be shown as red and a section of the Submarine in the Prize Table will also turn red. The periscope will move during the game.

- If the shot is a 'miss', the empty square will highlight white, to show nothing was hit.

The Player must click the Fire Button to continue the Game.

If the Player does not click on anything, the Fire Button will animate to indicate that the Player must click this to continue the Game.

To commence a Play of RAPID PLAY:

The RAPID PLAY instruction is: 'CLICK FIRE TO REVEAL YOUR SHOTS. SINK AN ENEMY CRAFT TO WIN PLUS COLLECT INSTANT PRIZES.'

The Player must position the cursor over the Fire Button and click. On doing so the following will happen:

- The two Cannons will fire at the Board. At the same time the Shots Left Indicator will decrease by one. All 12 shots are fired automatically upon pressing 'FIRE'.

- This process will continue until all shots have been fired.

If the Player does not click on anything, the Fire Button will animate to indicate that the Player must click this to continue the Game.

If the Player hits all the sections of a Ship in a row in the Prize Table, the Ship in that row will highlight red and the corresponding Prize will highlight white to indicate that the Player has won that amount. If the Player hits the periscope three times, the Submarine in the Prize Table will highlight red and the corresponding Prize will highlight white to indicate that the Player has won that amount. If the Player hits a mine, the corresponding mine in the Instant Prize Table will turn red and the Prize will highlight white to indicate that the Player has won an Instant Prize.

A Player's Play ends when all 12 shots have been fired. A message will appear to the bottom left of the Game Play Window indicating the amount the Player has won, if any. A FINISH button will appear to the bottom right of the Game Play Window; the Player must click the FINISH button to complete the game.
