Life changing

Amit’s life changed forever in just 36 hours

Amit was 33 with a promising career as a GP. He and his wife were thinking about starting a family and the future seemed rosy. But one day he woke up and noticed that something wasn’t right.

His vision was hazy and his wife saw spots of blood on his cheek. They knew something was wrong and it turned out that Amit had suffered a haemorrhage in the back of his eyes. His world went dark.

Eventually, with help from a National Lottery-funded project – The Big Lunch – Amit found a way out of the darkness and into a friendly and supportive community.

“My life is more vivid and colourful than it ever was as a sighted person, and that’s because of the people around me,” said Amit. That’s why this year Amit threw his own Big Lunch street party so people can get to know those they live near. “I don’t feel anybody should be on their own,” he added.

Every week National Lottery players generate around £30 million for Good Causes. The Big Lunch brings communities together to share food, have fun and get to know each other. National Lottery funding makes all this possible.

Watch Amit’s film to see why The Big Lunch is so important to him and hear more about how he dealt with his life-changing experience. There’s also an audio described version of this video which you can watch here.

And as Amit says “We are one community, let’s be there for one another”.
