‘Big Surprise’ for Barnet’s Hockey Hero

The Vitality Women’s Hockey World Cup has come to London, and thanks to National Lottery funding, England’s gold medal winning hosts are defending their title with an event that’s attracted spectators from across the globe. But when it comes to major sporting events, the volunteers are the real unsung heroes, we surprised one outstanding Hockey Maker on his first shift of the tournament.

Over the past two years, Hockey Maker Hamid hasn’t missed the opportunity to volunteer at a hockey event, taking on a range of roles to support excited fans as they turn up to support their favourite side – and this year’s women’s World Cup is no exception.

Hamid has been a real asset to England Hockey over the years but the real impact has been in his increased confidence, as Assistant Event Manager, Nicky Milford explains “Hamid has not allowed his learning difficulties to stop him and has grown a lot over his years of service to England Hockey. He’s become an invaluable member of our Hockey Maker team and greets everyone with a lovely smile. He has put in over 600 volunteering hours, and hasn’t missed a single domestic or international event.’

In the event’s very first match between Germany and South Africa, an unassuming Hamid received his ‘Big Surprise’ when the half-time announcer invited the crowd to thank Hamid for all his tireless work. Find out what happened when thousands of spectators joined one gold medal-winning hockey player to say a great big thank you.

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,000 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
