Life changing

These people get on a motorbike and ride around saving people - free of charge

It's cold and dark outside. The rain is lashing against the window. You're inside. Cosy and warm. The last thing you want to do is head out into the night. Unless you're a "blood biker".

The North West Blood Bikes is a voluntary, out–of–hours transport service, working with NHS hospitals and labs in Lancashire and the Lakes.

This group of motorcyclists volunteers their 'down' time – evenings, weekends, bank holidays, seven days a week, 365 days a year - to ensure hospitals don’t have to pay for private couriers or taxis out of hours.

They carry urgent and emergency blood, platelets, samples, donor breast milk, patient notes and theatre equipment to wherever it needs to be. Watch the film above to see them in action.

Thanks to you, volunteers like the North West Blood Bikes are making a huge difference in our communities. Since The National Lottery began, people like them all across the UK, have volunteered over 150 million hours of their time - that's the equivalent of 17,000 years – to help people through the projects you've funded.
