Life changing

Taking Hollywood to the Highlands

Screen Machine is a lottery funded mobile cinema which brings mainstream movies to over 40 rural locations in Scotland’s Highlands and Islands. It visits each location for between one and four days, approximately every two months, and gives locals the opportunity to enjoy the same big-screen experience that those living in towns and cities can have all the time.

Using a special hydraulic system, what looks like a regular articulated truck, expands into an 80-seat state-of-the-art digital cinema, complete with red velour seas and surround sound system. With a projectionist and usher on hand, it is the perfect means of enjoying all films - from I, Daniel Blake to Rogue One.

Wear and tear on the current 12 year old vehicle, which expands and closes typically three times a week, meant that the lifespan of the cinema was starting to look rather short. But thanks to support from National Lottery funding, a full and thorough refit will be carried out by the Screen Machine’s original builders, France-based Toutenkamion, during April and May.

The refit will extend its life by at least another six years. So we can look forward to bringing our customers movies way beyond La La Land.

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,000 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
