How you’re helping to change attitudes towards dementia

For writer and director, Tanya Myers, ‘Inside Out of Mind’ is a very personal project. When her mother-in-law died from dementia in 2010, she was left feeling sad and frustrated about how hard she’d found it to communicate with her.

“’Inside Out of Mind’ is a play for everybody who feels that sense of loss you have when a loved one succumbs to dementia. It was really important to me to get the right balance between the sadness and the panic and the humour. The play generates a lot of laughter and I hope the deep affection that develops between the carers and the patients touches people.”

The play depicts life on a dementia ward from the perspective of the patients, the staff and visitors. And the ground-breaking production is based on the real-life experiences of three healthcare assistants working on an acute NHS dementia ward.

‘Inside Out of Mind’ is one of the projects in the Arts category of The National Lottery Awards, which celebrate the UK’s favourite National Lottery funded projects. It is one of only seven of the 49 finalists to be selected to star on The National Lottery draw shows over coming weeks.

The winning projects will receive a £2,000 cash prize, an iconic National Lottery Awards trophy and attend a star-studded Awards ceremony, broadcast on BBC One in September.
