‘Viceroy's House' director thanks you

Gurinder Chadha's moving new film 'Viceroy's House' couldn’t have been made without you. By playing National Lottery games, you help support British-made films. Check out the new releases coming up – all supported by National Lottery funding.

Viceroy’s House

In cinemas from 3rd March.

For six months in 1947, iconic British statesmen Lord Mountbatten assumed the post of last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people. Mountbatten lived upstairs together with his wife and daughter. Downstairs lived their 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants. As the political elite took their seats upstairs to wrangle over the birth of independent India, conflict erupted throughout the House.

Based on an inspiring true story, Viceroy's House is a very personal film for director Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham and Bride and Prejudice) - her family were caught up in the events. Fittingly, 2017 marks the 70th anniversary of the Independence of India and the founding of Pakistan.

Hugh Bonneville and Gillian Anderson play Lord and Lady Mountbatten.

Free Fire

In cinemas from 31st March.

The callously uproarious new film from Ben Wheatley takes place almost entirely inside a tumbledown harbourside warehouse in Boston, where a delegation from the Irish Republican Army are collecting a shipment of assault rifles from a yawping South African gun-runner and his seamy associates. Wheatley’s sixth feature is the kind of film you sense might have been made on a dare. Because when the arms deal goes south – as it inevitably, and almost immediately, does – the film devolves into a 12-way shoot-out which keeps blazing, yelling, limping and leaking blood right up to the final cut to black. Far more than his previous films, which tend to unfold in a dream-like daze, Free Fire is a mad contraption, bristling with bravado and black, sardonic wit. Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph.

Cast includes Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer and Sharlto Copley.
