Volunteer cabbies shine on national television

Volunteer taxi drivers from London and the Home Counties recently won a National Lottery Award for their inspirational work helping veterans and the war-disabled.

The London Taxi Benevolent Association for War Disabled Charity was named the nation's Best Voluntary Project at this year's National Lottery Awards. Broadcaster Katie Derham presented the unassuming cabbies with their award in front of a glittering crowd and millions of TV viewers.

The drivers were much–applauded by their war veteran passengers, for whom the cabbies provide outings, entertainment and much needed specialised equipment.

John Barrowman, who presented the show for the seventh year, said:

"The National Lottery Awards celebrate the UK's favourite Lottery–funded projects as voted for by the public. They recognise the legends behind these amazing organisations – ordinary people who do extraordinary things with National Lottery funding."
