Five reasons why park life is good for all

Since The National Lottery started investing in Parks for People in 1996, the number of annual visitors has increased by eight million. That’s brilliant. It means a lot more people are getting outside playing Frisbee with a lively dog, joining a rounders park league or just enjoying a walk in the park.

  • Parks help keep us active: parks provide an excellent place for people to come together to walk, run, climb and play in the fresh air. And the benefits of this are like a multi-storey car park: huge and concrete. Whether it’s a Park Run on the weekends, an evening game of five-a-side with jumpers for goalposts, or taking your dog for a walk, parks help us keep our bodies and minds happy and healthy Research by the University of Exeter suggests access to good quality green space is linked to feeling healthier, a lower body mass index and decreased levels of obesity, plus improved mental health and wellbeing.
  • Parks bring us together: we eat, keep fit, play, escape from busy lives and office jobs, experience our heritage and discover our history all in our local parks – in fact, over half the UK population use their park each month.
  • Parks make a great home: the trees, undergrowth, hedgerows and plants that scatter our parks provide essential habitats for the birds, insects and small mammals that keep our fragile ecosystem going.
  • Parks house art and culture: parks provide an invaluable space to experience some of the UKs best visual art, music and theatre.
  • Parks are part of our history: many public parks house the remains of our ancient history, from Roman ruins to Norman castles.

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,000 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
