Life changing

See how you’ve helped make sure Sam’s future is set in stone

When Sam Turner was a little boy growing up in Leeds, he dreamt of building things. But he never thought he’d be following in the footsteps of medieval masons and working 1,300 year-old stones at York Minster, producing work that will be here for centuries to come.

Thanks to you, Sam won a stonemason apprenticeship as part of the York Minster Revealed project which was given £10.5 million of National Lottery funding by the Heritage Lottery Fund. More than a year later and Sam is still thriving in his dream job.

Sam’s story is just one of more than 20,000 projects awarded Lottery funding over the past year. To celebrate the difference Lottery funding makes to the world of heritage, the Heritage Lottery Fund has been telling the stories of how lives have been changed. Sam is just one of 100 people whose stories have been told so far.
