Life changing

How you’re helping our brave war veterans to rehabilitate

This is the incredible story of Micky Yule. As a staff sergeant serving with the Royal Engineers in Afghanistan, Micky lost both legs after stepping on an IED. His life changed forever and Micky has embarked on an extraordinary journey to become a powerlifting competitor at Rio.

Since 1948, when 16 former service personnel took to the lawns at Stoke Mandeville hospital to compete in an Archery contest, sport has been an important part of the rehabilitation process for those wounded in war.

Now, thanks to you, veterans like Micky have access to a network of lottery-funded support services like physiotherapists and coaches, nutritionists and sports psychologists, as well as personal funding so they can focus on training for success.

You’ve played a key role in the UK’s sporting success. To date over 5000 elite athletes have benefitted from National Lottery funding, enabling them to have access to some of the best coaching, facilities and support staff in the world. Recipients, past and present, include Sir Chris Hoy, Ellie Simmonds, Dame Sarah Storey, the GB Women’s Hockey team and Mo Farah. British athletes have won 847 Olympic and Paralympic medals since National Lottery funding was first awarded to elite athletes in 1997.

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,000 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
