Aberdeen FC fan plays a blinder with EuroMillions win

A dad from Bridge of Don scored £140,245 on EuroMillions after buying a ticket on a whim.

Stanley Moir, 58, will be using some of his win to pay off his mortgage and hopes it will allow him to retire earlier than planned. But his first purchase is going to be a season ticket for Aberdeen FC and a new strip.

“I haven’t really had a chance to think about what else I will use the money for but it’s going to make me feel financially secure. My daughter Samantha is busy doing her Highers just now so luckily she hasn’t had time to make a shopping list yet.”

Unbelievable luck

Stanley normally plays Lotto every week but decided to buy a EuroMillions Lucky Dip when he popped into the supermarket for some shopping on the Friday of the draw.

The next morning, he was trying to get daughter Samantha, 16, out of bed to do her paper round when he remembered he hadn’t checked his ticket. He scanned it using the National Lottery app but couldn’t believe his eyes at first.

“When I saw the message coming up on the app I thought I had won £14,000 but when I looked again I realised it was actually over £140,000. I took it in to Samantha and asked her to check it for me – that soon got her out of bed.

“I went straight downstairs and put on the TV so I could check the numbers again. Then the first thing I did was sign the ticket and put it somewhere safe.”

Sharing the good news

Later that morning Stanley went to visit his brother to share the good news.

“I gathered all the family into the living room and switched on the TV. My brother thought I was checking the football results, but they were results of a different kind.

“I got the winning numbers up on the screen and said to them ‘See that one person in the UK who has matched 5 numbers and one Lucky Star, he’s in the room here with you. That one person is me’. They were all so happy for me.”
