Life changing

Great grandmother up all night waiting for win

A great grandmother from Scunthorpe didn’t wake her husband to check whether she was a millionaire, just in case she was wrong. After a restless night Annie Showell got husband John to check the ticket and the pair then celebrated their EuroMillions win with a nice cup of tea.

Annie Showell, 70, couldn’t believe her luck when she checked the EuroMillions results on the TV just before bed. The great grandmother was pretty confident she was the guaranteed millionaire in the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker draw but wasn’t 100% sure. Rather than wake husband John and discover she was mistaken, the retired care home domestic tucked the ticket under her pillow and went to bed.

Not a lot of sleep

Without John to double check Annie couldn’t believe what she was seeing, and not prepared to wake him she had to wait. Annie said, “My husband was asleep in bed when I initially checked my ticket and I didn’t even bother going to wake him as I was convinced I had done something wrong and it was all a big mistake.

“I must have only slept for about one hour. My mind was racing with all sorts of questions: had I just won £1m? Was I dreaming or had I got it all wrong? It seemed too good to be true - £1m is just an incredible sum of money.”

Cup of tea

It was only when John checked the Millionaire Maker code the following morning that Annie finally started to believe she really was a National Lottery winner.

“We celebrated with a nice calming cup of tea. The news really is still sinking in now and I keep having to pinch myself to convince myself that it is not all a dream.”

No worries

Top of the shopping list is a new house for the couple. Annie loves gardening and is looking to buy somewhere with a lovely garden where she can spend time relaxing and cultivating it to her own tastes. “We recently sold our house and moved into rented accommodation – just to give us more disposable income to enjoy life in our retirement.

“But now all of these worries have been taken away. Thanks to our National Lottery win we can now buy the house of our dreams – and live the life we always dreamed of having. We just have so many choices now, no money worries and we are free to live life to the full.”

Annie, who was born in Glasgow and moved to Scunthorpe when she was in her thirties, has no intention of stopping playing The National Lottery.

“I have already got my ticket for this Friday! If I can win once, I can win again!“

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,000 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
