Brits reveal how they would celebrate winning big

Scream and shout, quiet contemplation, or maybe a tear or two – how would you celebrate some fantastic news – like winning The National Lottery? We asked the Great British public what they would do if had something to celebrate – and the results might surprise you.

Splash the cash?

It wouldn’t be spend, spend, spend for most. Only a third admit they would immediately go out and treat themselves to a luxury. It seems loved ones are more important to the good people of Britain. A fifth would be off down the pub with friends but most would turn the win into an excuse for a momentous family gathering. Bringing family and fiends together for a meal was chosen by more than half of people surveyed.

True to the British stereotype 13% would simply choose to celebrate with a cup of tea. But a big excited congratulations to the 5% who would immediately go to the airport and jump on a flight.

Expressions of joy

Clearly you’d smile if you won. More than four in ten of the public say they would smile so hard that their cheeks would hurt. Just over a quarter admit that a win would bring a tear or two – I think we can all imagine having a little weep.

More than one on ten would go all cartoon faced with eyes wide and jaw dropped. But 8% said they would not display any expression or emotion at all – come on you can celebrate better than that.

How would you feel?

Without wishing to sound like a football manager a third of people surveyed would describe their mood when they win as being ‘over the moon’. This was the most popular celebratory expression with 25% of people say they would be ‘thrilled’ and one in 5 individuals would say they feel ‘absolutely chuffed’. Almost a fifth of people said that on words or phrases would be able to express their celebratory joy – so I suppose they’d just be quiet.

Can’t take my eyes off of you

Almost a third of people stated that if they had a winning lottery ticket in their hand, they would stare at it continuously, as if it was their first love. This was just above choosing to dance around the room and the fifth of people who would hug, squeeze and kiss the lottery ticket.

However, 4% of us would choose to run down the street waving the ticket around whilst blasting an air horn shouting “I’ve Won!”

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,000 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
