Lucky penny delivers

A bus driver from Ashton-under-Lyne found a lucky penny, rubbed it on his lottery ticket and won over £1.8M.

Sean Lloyd has handed in his notice and is now looking forward to a life of luxury, all thanks to the special penny he picked up.

Sean said, "I had just finished my shift on the bus and was going to get my lunch. I noticed a shiny penny on the floor outside the shop and I just felt lucky. I thought, 'this is my lucky day – I am going to buy a lottery ticket'. I bought my ticket and actually rubbed the penny on the ticket – just to bring me some extra luck."

It wasn't until later in the evening after the draw that the dad of four realised the power of his lucky penny. He said, "I thought, ‘I am going to be lucky tonight’. I got my iPad out and started to check my numbers. I saw I had five and I thought, ‘amazing, I can now pay towards my daughter’s wedding bill’.

“I then noticed I had the bonus ball too and I just screamed with excitement – I could not believe it! My wife had gone to bed – I ran upstairs to wake her and just shouted, ‘we are going out right now to celebrate’ – I think she thought I had gone slightly mad.”

After a few celebratory drinks and a very late night Sean got up and immediately handed in his notice. “I didn’t hesitate. I am now looking forward to a wonderful life. I will be able to pay off the mortgage and all of my debts, and take my family on a dream holiday.”

With no bus to drive, Sean is going for something a bit more luxurious to get him from A to B, with plans to splash out on a Bentley. His first stop is likely to be Old Trafford, with a season ticket to the Theatre of Dreams also on order.

“Things like this just don’t happen to people like me. I just cannot believe it. I have to keep pinching myself and telling myself this is really happening and Melanie and I really have won the lottery.”

Lotto can only roll four times. As no one matched all six numbers in the draw on 28th January 2015, the prize money was shared between the eight winners in the next winning prize level (five plus the bonus ball), who each, like Sean scooped £1,804,955.

Now meet Sean's lucky penny.
