Seven epic Wednesday wins

Most players aren’t fussy about what day of the week they become millionaires, however there’s a growing band of winners for whom Wednesday is head and shoulders above the rest.

Here are seven reasons why becoming a millionaire on a Wednesday is a great way to go:

  • Wednesday winners can be wacky. Mark Weir won £2.7M and turned his shed into a pub. Julie Jeffery won £1M in 2002 and promptly ran out to buy a cheese grater! Mick Eggleston who won £2.7M in 2007 tops the lot, splashing out on a Robin Reliant after his win. Which colour? Champagne gold of course.
  • Iris Jeffrey from Belfast became the biggest ever individual winner of Lotto on Wednesday 7th July, 2004. She banked a stunning £20.1M and promised to “make sure that my family and friends are secure for life”. It took Iris almost a month to claim her prize, she said she forgot to check her ticket.
  • Martyn and Sandra White from Luton were on their way to the airport when they checked their emails and discovered a £10.7M Wednesday win. They didn’t want to disappoint the couple they were holidaying with so coolly spent a week away in Italy before returning to claim their giant cheque.
  • Whitby mum-of-five Jane Surtees promised to have some fun after winning £7.5M. She describes her Wednesday win as the best Christmas present ever, arriving as it did just a fortnight before Santa. It enabled her to have the wedding of her dreams, with a simple ceremony for 100 guests, before a huge all-day reception in their new giant garden, complete with fun fair.
  • Camden street cleaner Joseph Whiting celebrated his £4.5M win in 2014 by downing his broom forever. He only bought his winning ticket on a whim NINE minutes before entries to the draw closed.
  • Annie Brown became The National Lottery’s 2,500th millionaire when she won £1.1M on 13th October, 2010. The retired Bo’ness dinner lady promised to travel to Canada to visit relatives with her new-found wealth. Since Annie, the millionaire count has shot up to more than 3,800.
  • The Smile syndicate, a group of seven hairdressers and beauticians, shared £2.9M in 2007 but committed to keep working. Syndicate leader Wendy Brown said: “I love my job and my clients and I couldn’t desert them.” Four of the group went on to work together in a new salon, looking after their beloved clients.

The first Wednesday Lotto draw was on 5th February 1997 and it created three big winners, each banking £3.3M. From then on Wednesday has helped to make some of the biggest-ever Lotto winners.

In May, Lotto is guaranteeing to make a new millionaire in the Lotto raffle every Wednesday.
