Granny jumping for joy after Scratchcard win

A granny from Diss can now make her granddaughter's dream come true after winning the £300,000 top prize on a Scratchcard from National Lottery's GameStore. She is jumping for joy as she can now treat her grandchild to the trampoline she has always wanted.

June Kilbourn, 59, bought the Cashword Orange Scratchcard from her local paper shop before heading off to work at Wharton Nurseries where she was potting roses. “Every morning before work, about 6am, I pop to the shop to pick up the paper. It was my son’s birthday on the Tuesday so I decided to treat myself to a scratchcard as a sort of celebration. It sounds silly really, but with £300,000 in the bank it doesn’t feel too silly! I went home and while the kettle was boiling I played the scratchcard and couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that I’d won the top prize.”

Don’t be daft

Running upstairs June woke her husband up, Charles, saying ‘I think I’ve won £300,000’ whereupon her spouse of 42 years told her not to be so daft and rolled over and went back to sleep. Convinced she had a winning ticket, June left Charles snoring and went back to the local shop where they confirmed that it was a big win and she should call Camelot.

June went along to work as normal and waited for the National Lottery Line to open at 9am. “Once at work I just couldn’t concentrate, and when my manager heard what had happened he very kindly told me I’d best get home and even gave me a lift home so I could call Camelot.”

Leap into the future

The win means that June can start thinking about a secure retirement and, of course, a trampoline.

“I’ve worked at the nursery for almost 15 years and was planning to retire in May, but making ends meet was going to be a struggle so I was worried. Now thanks to one big chunk of luck I don’t need to worry and can spend more time with the family and caring for my granddaughter. We are very close and it always broke my heart when I had to go off to work and leave her. She would ask me not to go but, I explained that if I go to work, I can save up to buy her a trampoline. Now there’s no more work for nanny but I can still buy that trampoline!”

While a trampoline tops the shopping list, June is still deciding if she will be making any more purchases. “It really feels like the world’s our oyster! I may well look at getting a new car and, while we won’t be moving, it will be nice to think about having some of the renovations and decorating done that I have always dreamt of, but never been able to afford. A new carpet might not be top of everyone’s list, but it will make me so happy!

“But without doubt the best thing about the win is being able to help my family and bring a little more financial security for all of us. It’s a dream come true and I am still jumping for joy!”

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,000 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
