£1 whim wins big for Maidenhead lady

A Scratchcard bought on a whim turned up trumps for a lady from Maidenhead. The purchase, perhaps led by ‘lady luck’ is now worth £100,000.

Gillian Lewis can’t believe she has ended up a winner. She said, “I was in my local supermarket doing some food shopping. When I was handed £1 change, instead of putting the coin in my purse as usual I decided to have a bit of fun and buy a National Lottery Scratchcard. I really don’t play that often so I’m just not sure what made me buy it, Lady Luck maybe?!”

Disabled by a stroke eight years ago and registered blind, Gillian was unable to reveal the prize so asked partner Gwyn to play the scratchcard. “When my carer bought me home from the shops I asked Gwyn to play the scratchcard for me, not for one minute thinking he would say ‘there’s £100,000 on here’. I have to say, it was such a shock that our minds just went to scrambled egg. Gwyn said he was going to cry, I thought I was going to be sick – we were a right pair!”

With the money banked, Gillian is busy making plans for a secure future and a few home improvements. She revealed, “We have had a tough time in recent years. I was disabled by a stroke which meant I had to give up work so big things like decorating or new furniture were a luxury we could never quite afford. This win offers a bit more security for the future and a chance to create the home we would choose with new paint colours, curtains and furniture. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would ever be able to say that!”

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,000 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
