Calthorpe Community Food Growing Scheme - an inner-city oasis

The Calthorpe Project is using National Lottery funding to bring nature into the heart of the city. It’s helping low-income families in London to grow their own food within their local community.

Low-income and disadvantaged communities in and around London's Kings Cross are coming together to grow their own veg. Led by the Calthorpe Project, they're learning about healthy living and the benefits of being outdoors.

Weekly support sessions show the new gardeners how to grow everything from herbs to vegetables in anything from window boxes to allotments.

The project also works with adults with learning disabilities and mental illness, improving their quality of life through outdoor living and horticultural training.

Not only is it helping locals learn more about healthy eating, but it is also helping people from different cultural and diverse backgrounds to come together as a community.

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,400 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
