Your starring role in this year's Cannes Film Festival

British director Ken Loach came out of retirement to scoop the coveted Palme D'or at this year's Cannes Film Festival for his film 'I, Daniel Blake'.

You played an important supporting role with the film receiving Lottery-funding via the British Film Institute (BFI) to help get it to the big screen.

The film tells the story of Daniel Blake, a 59-year-old widower living in Newcastle who can neither work nor claim benefits after having a heart attack.

Your star turn doesn’t stop there. Lottery-funded film 'American Honey' by Kent-born director Andrea Arnold also came up trumps, winning the Cannes Film Festival 2016 Jury Prize.

'American Honey', featuring Hollywood star Shia LaBeouf, follows a group of wild youths as they travel through America selling hard-luck stories and magazine subscriptions.

Supporting award-winning British cinema

Ben Roberts, director of the BFI Film Fund, said: "What a moment for British cinema, and for two important and humane films with so much to say.

"Bravo to Ken and to Andrea and their collaborators – including the unstoppable Robbie Ryan who shot both films.

"This is cinema from the heart, and we're grateful that we have an industry that can support such personal, powerful film-making."

The first time Ken Loach won a Palme D'Or was in 2006 for Lottery-funded film 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley'. That same year, Andrea Arnold also won her first (of three) Jury Prize for her first feature film, 'Red Road', which had lottery money through Scottish Screen and UK Film Council. Andrea won her second Jury prize in 2009 for Lottery-funded film, Fish Tank.
