Meet the 25th Birthday National Lottery Awards ‘Special Recognition’ winner

When Elizabeth lost her son Nick to suicide at the age of 27 following a drug relapse, the devasting loss prompted her to set up DrugFAM, a charity promoting drug awareness and supporting bereaved families.

Elizabeth Burton Phillips MBE is well aware of the emotional toll and devastating impact drugs can have on families – her twin sons Nick and Simon both fell prey to heroin addiction.

DrugFAM offers support and advice to families who are affected by a loved ones use of drugs and alcohol, or who have been bereaved by addiction. It works with around 3,000 families a year, and runs a National Lottery funded telephone helpline which takes 10,000 calls annually – many of which Elizabeth has taken herself.

Elizabeth was honoured with the special recognition award at The National Lottery Awards, for dedicating her life to helping thousands of families across the nation.

Watch the video as presenter Alex Jones visits Elizabeth to hear more about DrugFAM and how Elizabeth and her son Simon overcame tragedy.
