Women’s sport is focus of inspiring podcast supported by National Lottery

Former professional footballer Kelly Lindsey has a unique perspective on the question of whether male and female sportspeople need to be coached differently.

The 42-year-old Nebraska native, who coached the Afghan national women’s team after retiring from the US women’s national soccer team, said, “I think you coach every single human being differently. Every human is a unique individual. It doesn't matter if they're male, they're female, you just have to connect with who they are as a human because everyone has different values and a different vision.”

Kelly’s determination to foster and promote women’s football brought her to the UK in 2021. As the Head of Performance at Lewes FC – the Sussex club that made headlines in 2017 when it announced it would pay its women’s team as much as its men’s team – she has a unique perspective on what it takes to level up the playing field.

Speaking to Sue Anstiss MBE, on an episode of The Game Changers, a podcast supported with National Lottery funding, Kelly said she was accustomed to working with teams made up of disparate women who each required a distinctive form of coaching. She said, “To me it doesn't matter if it's men or women. Humans are humans and they want, we want, connection. We want trust. We want people who care about us. And when you do that, you can get anyone to progress and move forward.”

The Game Changers is an award-winning podcast talking to trailblazers in women’s sport; individuals knocking down barriers and challenging the status quo for women and girls everywhere. It features interviews with big names including Kelly, Olympic pole vaulter Holly Bradshaw and former rugby professional and sports presenter Ugo Monye.

The launch of The Game Changers’ 2022 season a few weeks before International Women’s Day (8th March 2022) seems appropriate. And Sue, who founded the podcast and presents it, said The National Lottery’s support is a perfect fit for a podcast giving inspiring women a platform to tell their stories.

She said, “I am so thrilled to be partnering with The National Lottery as there’s such synergy with the work enabled by National Lottery funding. From the much celebrated This Girl Can campaign and initiatives that help shape school sport for girls, to schemes that encourage women as volunteers in the workforce, along with coaches, officials and women taking leadership positions on the boards of our sports organisations.”

The full interview with Kelly and other episodes of the 2022 season of The Game Changers is available across all podcast platforms including Apple, Spotify and Google. Alternatively, you can listen to The Game Changers here.
