Bike Start is a Lottery funded project which trains 16-25 year olds to refurbish, service and maintain bicycles.
The young people who take part are struggling at school, in trouble with the law, homeless, jobless or facing family breakdown and experienced bike mechanics take them on and become their mentor.
Bike Start is run by The Source youth charity in Aldershot and serves some of the most deprived communities in the country blighted by issues such as drink, drugs, violence and teen pregnancy. With your support, the project breaks the cycle, fixing people while fixing bikes.
Bike Start runs up to three sessions each week in which trainees learn bike maintenance and repair skills and good work habits. They can also access the other support such as anger management, counselling and teen parent mentoring. The approach helps people grow in confidence, know themselves better, tackle their demons and work towards a happier future.
In supporting Bike Start you are also opening up cycling and all its health and social benefits to a new audience. Affordable servicing and donated bikes sold at low prices means anyone can take it up and led bike rides help people explore their local cycle routes with confidence.
