How Joanna Rowsell Shand is taking on the cycling world

Talent-spotted at 15 years old, Joanna Rowsell Shand exploded onto the cycling scene, winning races from her very first full racing season in 2005. Having never cycled previously, British Cycling talent scouts identified a raw talent in Joanna that, combined with expert coaching and her fierce will to win, would take her to the top of the sport – and you were with her every step of the way.

Lottery funding allows Joanna to train full-time and have some of the best coaching, facilities and medical attention in the world. At London 2012, the impact of this backing was clear. Not only did Joanna win the Women's Team Pursuit and break a world record but Team GB also smashed previous medal-hauls and dominated in cycling. Now Joanna has Rio 2016 firmly in her sights.

It's not just elite sport where you are making a difference. Your play funds better playing fields, more coaches, classes and clubs. It provides thousands of opportunities for us all to take part, whether for fun and good health or to spot and nurture raw talent like Joanna and her fellow Team GB athletes.

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,000 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
