Horsing around at the Helix

Funding from The National Lottery has transformed under-used land into The Helix, an incredible living landmark at the heart of the community.

Providing a network of paths and cycleways, The Helix has made new connections between surrounding communities; a modern park with water features and biodiverse woodland sits at the heart of the site, creating a space for people to play, be more active, host events and provide opportunities for learning and involvement through volunteering.

The site is also home to The Kelpies, the world’s largest equine sculptures, which have become a symbol of the area’s regeneration and a much loved contemporary icon for Scotland, attracting visitors from across the world.

As with many National Lottery funded venues and attractions across the country, the park is supported by a team of volunteers who continue to build and regenerate the area, contributing to wildlife and habitat projects across the park. John is one of the incredible volunteers who helps out at the park, he explains the benefits that he and wife Ruth have gained since visiting and volunteering at the site.

Meet John

“My wife, Ruth, and I thoroughly enjoy visiting The Helix and are keen to encourage others to do the same. The park has many attractions for visitors from far and wide, including the iconic Kelpies. However, we believe that The Helix is also a tremendous area for local people to explore and enjoy. The park is a wonderful place to wander round with lots of hidden corners and wildlife. The younger visitors also enjoy the play area and the space to run and cycle in a safe environment. There are also events for all ages throughout the year.

“I have also learned how to dress up as a turkey!”

We joined the Events Volunteer Team to bring people to events and ensure they have a great experience. We have enjoyed meeting other volunteers and also coming into contact with visitors from all over the world. There is the opportunity to develop new skills, such as learning circus skills while volunteering at The Big Picnic event last summer! I have also learned how to burn peat, spray paint and dress up as a turkey, although not all at the same time!”

Thanks to National Lottery players for helping parks and attractions across the country to thrive.
