How one of the first gay rugby teams in the world is positively impacting the lives of its players

Since 1998, the Manchester Village Spartans have provided a warm and welcoming environment for gay men looking to join a sports team. In fact, back in the ‘90s, there were hardly any gay rugby clubs in the world – a matter the founding members of the team decided to tackle head on with great success. And it’s thanks to National Lottery players that the Manchester Village Spartans can continue to thrive 20 years later, as every ticket bought helps to fund good causes like theirs across the country.

“It’s had such a positive effect on my life”, says Spartans’ team member Ross Whitenstall. “I didn’t realise how much I would enjoy playing a team sport and making new friendships as a result.”

Well, sometimes you don’t know what you’re missing until you try it.
