Life changing

See how you’re helping create future rugby legends this season

Picture the scene: it is 7am on a grey and miserable weekday morning. Two unsuspecting teams of under-15 rugby players have hauled themselves onto coaches thinking they’re heading to a regular rugby festival. Instead they are taken to Twickenham Stadium where they are given personalised England shirts from England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster and then pep talks by England Forwards Coach Graham Rowntree and England Attacking Skills Coach Mike Catt before taking to the hallowed turf for a game they’ll never forget.

This happened to two lottery-funded teams: Novocastrians RFC from Newcastle Upon Tyne and Egremont RUFC from Cumbria. Novocastrians has received funding to help with the development of new pitches and new floodlights. The club’s junior section is now one of the biggest in Northumberland, after turning the tide of seasons of declining participation. Egremont, which has had funding for changing rooms, clubhouse rebuild and floodlighting, manage to achieve a lot in a small space: the cub runs two senior team and six youth teams all on a single pitch.

The clubs are just two of the thousands of grassroots rugby clubs you’ve helped around the UK – here’s how:

  • You've helped fund more than 3,900 grassroots rugby projects

  • These grants have helped rebuild clubhouses, renovate changing rooms, install floodlights, enable pitch improvements and support coaching for all ages

  • Over the past 20 years, you've helped raise over £202 million of funding for grassroots rugby

  • And you helped give two under-15 teams the surprise of a lifetime. Hit 'Play' above to see what happened
