Five reasons to be proud of lottery funding in 2016
As we stand on the brink of a brand new year, here’s a few things to look forward to in 2016:
1. And the BAFTA goes to... you! Since the lottery began, films you've helped fund have picked up 35 BAFTAs and 14 have won Oscars, not to mention numerous other industry awards. In 2016, lottery–funded films including Suffragette, Brooklyn and The Lobster are hotly tipped to pick up nominations for some of the biggest awards in show business. Nominations are announced from 8th January. Watch this space…
2. On the Road to Rio – thanks to you more than 1,300 elite athletes are getting the support necessary to compete at the biggest sports event on the planet – the Rio 2016 Olympics. After the success of London 2012, there's a lot to live up to and come August, Team GB will be jetting off to compete against the world's best – and you're helping to make that happen.
3. And it's not just in Brazil we'll be watching our sporting heroes at their best, in June we'll be tuning into Euro 2016 in France. After the epic England v Wales battle at 2015's Rugby World Cup, this time the old rivalry will be played out on the football pitch on 16th June. Your support for grassroots sports, through organisations like the FA and RFU is inspiring future generations of players.
4. 2016 is the Year of the Garden and whether you're green–fingered or not, you're helping to keep the UK's public parks and open spaces beautiful. Not only that but you're also helping to celebrate our most famous gardener – Capability Brown – with a festival to mark the 300th anniversary of his birth.
5. And finally, 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death. From The Globe, to the house where he lived with Anne Hathaway, you're supporting events and activity across the UK to commemorate the life and work of the world's greatest playwright.
