Winner workforce makes a splash at lottery-funded swimming pool

National Lottery winners worth over £25M came together on the hottest day of the year to help makeover a community swimming pool. Building, planting and painting were on the agenda for the winners to spruce up the lottery-funded Black Notley Community Association swimming pool in Essex.

Tania George, voluntary secretary at the Association, said: “At the start of this year we were beginning to wonder how we could carry on. Vandals had damaged the pool, our chemical shed was falling down and the boiler room roof consisted of a few rotten beams and a tarpaulin.

“Now look at us! We are extremely grateful to all of the lottery winners for supporting us in this way and giving their time. I just can’t believe that millionaires were willing to do this for us, it makes us feel like lottery winners too!”

Presiding over the refurbishments was a National Lottery-funded Paralympian gold medallist swimmer. Jessica-Jane Applegate is one of 1,300 athletes supported by UK Sport's National Lottery funded World Class Programme.

“Many community sports venues experience, tired, worn out facilities which make it harder for people to start or keep doing sport,” said Jessica-Jane.

“Who knows, maybe this pool will be instrumental in finding a future Olympian or Paralympian.”

The winners taking part on the day included two builders who have each celebrated their own lottery wins; Mark Myatt from Hemel Hempstead (£1 million) and Alan Elliot (£1 million).

They were joined by a team of hardworking local lottery winners including Jean Swatman from Lowestoft who won £2 million, Tracy and March Church from Benfleet (£2.8 million); Terry and Linda Vigus from Loughton (£1.2 million); Kerri-Anne Robinson from Stevenage (£2.5 million), Lesley Blackman and fiancée Matt McCarthy from Ware (£0.8 million) and Tim Orton from Thaxted (£2.9 million).

Winners who came from further afield to lend a hand included Ted and Marilyn Newton from Kent (£8 million) and Paul and Marie Kibler from Sutton Coldfield (£2 million).

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,000 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
