Lottery-funded project Granby Four Streets wins this year's Turner Prize.
Assemble has won the Turner Prize 2015 and £25,000 for its work on Liverpool housing scheme Granby Four Streets.
Assemble, a London-based collective of artists, designers and architects, has won this year's Turner Prize for its ongoing collaboration with Liverpool’s Granby Four Streets Community Land Trust.
The win represents a departure for the Turner Prize, as it recognises for the first time not a specific work of art, but a way of creating art, with and as part of a community.
The win is also a significant landmark in the history of the UK's burgeoning community business movement, as the lottery-funded Granby Four Streets project embodies the sustained determination of local residents, whose actions have brought their local area back to life. After decades of neglect by the local authority derelict terraced housing in the area is being restored, community spaces redeveloped and enterprise opportunities created, contributing to sustainable, economic development for the once thriving, now forgotten community.
Despite winning one of the art world's top prizes, there’s still a lot of work for Assemble and the Granby community to complete, and Granby Four Streets has recently secured finance from Power to Change, an organisation that uses lottery funding to support the development of community businesses. This funding will go towards the refurbishment of five empty homes that will provide affordable housing for local people.
Vidhya Alakeson, Chief Executive of Power to Change, said:
"Granby Four Streets' residents are a powerful example of what can be achieved when communities come together to find their own solutions to the economic and social challenges they face, whether that's the result of years of neglect or more recent economic hardship."
