Walk and talk your way to wellbeing

It’s no secret that many people have struggled with their mental health during the pandemic. For Lizzie Ballinger, one of the keys to finding and keeping a sense of wellbeing, is making sure you have some time for yourself.

Lizzie, a counsellor at National Lottery-funded suicide prevention centre The Martin Gallier Project, says carving out some proper ‘me time’ and indulging in something that gives you real satisfaction is essential. She said, “I really don’t think it matters what it is, it’s just about finding something that fits you, fits your life and brings you that sense of peace.”

Once you’ve decided what that activity is – and it might be as simple as taking the dog for a walk – the key is to commit to it. Lizzie said, “Put it in your diary and follow through on it.”

Her other tip: seek out people who you can talk to. She said, “They say a problem shared is a problem halved, so don’t be afraid to speak out and say you need some help. That’s how you find your people. Friends, your family, your partner or a stranger. All that matters is that you feel you can be yourself with them.”

The National Lottery has funded more than 625,000 good causes across the UK. This video series introduces you to fascinating people involved with just 5 of them and asks them to share some tips, techniques and secrets. As well as learning how to build strength from a trapeze artist, you’ll find out how to steady your nerves from a comedian. A filmmaker has advice on directing real people, a counsellor explains why it’s vital to put wellbeing first and a stargazer tells you how to find the North Star (no telescope required!).
