Karen’s joy at sharing big win news with mum

Winning £100,000 on a National Lottery Instant Win Game was exciting enough, but for Karen Lucock the icing on the cake was sharing the good news with her 91-year-old mother at their first face-to-face meeting since the lockdown.

Karen, 56, initially thought she had won £100 until she realised she had misread the figure on her phone screen. She said, “When I saw I’d won, I called straight away to claim my prize, which I thought was £100. It wasn’t until Camelot told me the real figure that I realised how much I’d won!

“I couldn’t believe it when the lady on the phone told me – my heart was pounding and I kept asking her to repeat it back to me. I told my sons who were with me at the time and we were all just in complete shock.”

The win was made all the more special because Karen was able to tell her elderly mother about it in person following the relaxation of lockdown rules. Karen said, “She’s told us she doesn’t want any of our winnings, so we’ve compromised on buying her a new dishwasher!”

Karen, who lives in Carlisle, decided to play the ‘MONOPOLY Gold Classic’ Instant Win Game, after noticing she had funds remaining in her online wallet. She intends to share her winnings with close family members including her two sons aged 26 and 29.

Karen and her husband John, a delivery driver, have also booked a family staycation for the later in the year.

She said, “After months of being cooped up during lockdown, it’s amazing to have such unbelievable news and, even better, we can actually go out and spend it now that restrictions are beginning to ease!”
