First class Lotto delivery for Barry postman

A postman from Barry is planning a global tour of sporting events after banking the Lotto jackpot. The £2.6M win is going to make his dream of a worldwide tour of major sporting competitions come true.

Matthew Evans celebrated his win with a day at the first Ashes Test. He is now planning to follow Wales to the European Championships, a trip to the Ashes down under, watching rugby in New Zealand and occasionally upgrading his Cardiff City season ticket to a box. He has also promised his dad a trip to the Monaco Grand Prix and his mum a seat at the next Wimbledon Men’s Final.

Matthew carried his winning ticket on his postal round for two days after the draw not realising it was worth millions. It was only when his local store said they couldn’t pay him his prize that he thought he might be a big winner.

He said, “When the machine went crazy, the manager of the shop came over and made me sign my ticket there and then before sending me home to phone Camelot. I started shaking thinking I must have won about £20,000. It wasn’t until I logged on at home that I realised I had matched six numbers but when the lady from Camelot told me that I’d won £2,604,015, I really couldn’t believe it."

“I was in shock on Friday night so just celebrated with my parents and had a few drinks but on the Saturday I already had tickets for the Ashes in Cardiff so I went along with my mates as planned. I told them my news and they were over the moon. They did let me buy the first round but after that, they made me put my wallet away.”

Now planning the next stage of his global sport tour, Matthew said, “I’ve always loved watching sport and this win means that as well as looking after my family, I can travel the world, watching my teams play. There are lots of trips on my wish list, I might even go to watch the final day of the Open this weekend, not that I can.”

While he hasn’t yet decided whether to give up work as a postman, he has taken four weeks off to enjoy his winnings and to shop for a new house and a new car.

“I’ve been saving up to buy a house for years and now I don’t have to worry anymore and can just buy whatever takes my fancy. I’m also going car shopping next week and can’t wait to upgrade my 16 year old Lexus,” Matthew added.
