'Crossed fingers’ become ‘green fingers’ after Lotto win for Wellingborough couple
A couple from Wellingborough are planting the seeds of celebration after winning £57,382. Linda Merrills and her partner John Smith, who play Lotto online, are planning to get green-fingered as they intend to spend their winnings on their garden.
Linda said, “I have been waiting to renovate our garden for ages and this win means we can do it in style. I want to flatten it and have some raised beds. Then it’s onto the driveway.”
Linda, a retired shop assistant, and John were on holiday at the time of the Lotto draw. She said, “We were in Mexico and checked our emails when we got back. I always play online and saw five emails from The National Lottery saying they had some good news. With us being away I presumed they had sent reminders, but I originally thought it was a mistake. John definitely thought it was a mistake and told me not to bother ringing the National Lottery Line. I ignored John and called straight away, and the lady on the end of the line confirmed everything.”
Linda and John’s good fortune is in part due to Linda’s first husband, also called John. The winning numbers were a mixture of Linda’s and husband John’s birthdays. Linda said: “He’ll be smiling down on me now saying ‘well done girl.’ I have always kept the same numbers 7, 17 and 46 – 7th July, 1946 which was John’s birth date. Mine are 15, 11, 48 – 15th November 1948.”
