Video: New Scottish Lotto Millionaire Raffle winner bowled over by win

James and Mary Roy have become the first Scottish winners of the Lotto Millionaire Raffle to come forward and share news of their fantastic win. The couple were one of the 25 guaranteed millionaires made in the special draw on Saturday 10th October, which set a new Lotto record for the most millionaires created in one night.

To help keen bowler James celebrate, double Commonwealth Gold medallist, Alex "Tattie" Marshall paid the couple a surprise visit at their bowls club.

Retiree James plays a Lucky Dip every Saturday but he didn't realise he was one of the 25 millionaires until he checked his ticket on the Sunday morning. He said, "I turned on the TV to check my numbers and I don’t know how many times I read them over to make sure I was right. I was so shocked I didn't know what to do"

We went back to the Co-op in Shotts where I bought the ticket and the assistant scanned it on the machine. Obviously they couldn't pay out £1 million – they handed me back my ticket and a slip with the phone number on it.

"Once the ticket had been verified we took it to my sister and brother-in-law’s house and they kept it in their safe for us."

Now the life–changing win is safely in the bank the couple can start spending. "We've been living in our house for 30 years and now we will finally be able to buy it. Mary struggles to get about so we will put in a stair lift and a walk in shower which will make things so much easier for her."

James continued, "I'm 70 years old so I won’t be buying a fancy sports car but I will buy myself a new set of bowls. It's an amazing feeling to know we can walk into a shop and just buy what we want – we couldn't do that before."

It really is a golden year for the couple who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Hogmanay. "The bowling club always holds a New Year party so we will be celebrating our anniversary there with 16 of our friends. We won’t be splashing out on a big party but I will treat Mary to a new ring."

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,000 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
