Very lucky lorry driver lands second lottery win, but admits it is all just a mistake

Almost four years to the day after banking £55,000, a Staffordshire lorry driver is celebrating a second, slightly bigger, win. Stuart Powell became a double National Lottery winner with a £1M cheque – but admits it was all down to a mistake.

Buying his ticket wherever he happens to be driving his lorry Stuart had tried to buy a ticket for the big EuroMillions draw on Friday night, but in a fateful mistake was actually sold a ticket for the following Tuesday's draw. The wrong ticket turned out to be so right, when it became a winner worth £1M.

Stuart, who always calls wife Denise to check their numbers, said, “The lady in the shop got her dates mixed up and I’m so glad she did. I was on night shift and called Denise in the evening before she goes to bed to check the ticket. After checking the Raffle code what seemed like a million times Denise said we were winners... again!”

Despite the time Stuart and Denise immediately called their children to share their fantastic news. Matthew wouldn’t believe them, Nathen didn’t answer his phone and Adam didn’t believe them and went back to sleep. Stuart said: “The next morning I called The National Lottery to stake the claim, and then Adam called me to say he’d had a weird dream about me phoning him to say he was a lottery winner!”

Second win

The ticket mix up is a further sign that luck follows Stuart around. It came virtually four years to the day after a Lotto win. “I won £55,464 on 30th November 2011, on my birthday, and gave all of it away to my children and wife, and I intend to do exactly the same with this million. I’m going to buy the kids a house each, my elderly father a car, Denise wants a Range Rover Evoque and me, well I’m not bothered as long as they are happy.”

To win once is amazing, but twice is slightly unbelievable, even for Stuart. “The timing couldn’t be better with Christmas around the corner. Maybe when I sit at the table on Christmas Day it may start to sink in. To think I have won twice... it’s just unbelievable... the stuff of dreams!”

The National Lottery has been changing the lives of winners and supporting good causes across the UK since 1994. In that time, there have been more than 7,000 new millionaires created and by playing The National Lottery you raise over £4 million for Good Causes every dayΔ.
