Kent couple look for dream home for retirement
A couple from Ashford are retirement-ready after winning £1M on EuroMillions Millionaire Maker. The pair won playing online and are now planning for a restful future.
The lucky pair, Josie, 63, and Bill, 65, Woodward – Kent’s second lottery millionaires in as many weeks – are wasting no time in getting their retirement plans underway with work notice already given and house-hunting in full swing. Josie said,
“When I saw the email saying there was news about the ticket I assumed, like everyone, it would be a couple of pounds. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined it would be enough for Bill to finish work and for us to start looking at the type of houses we are now considering.”
A total shock
Josie discovered news of her win on Saturday when she had a spare moment to check her emails as she enjoyed the first cup of tea of the day. The mum of two was shocked when she logged onto her account and saw so many noughts on the screen.
“I was so stunned I just sat looking at it and then decided surely it was a fault with the technology so put the iPad aside to log-on to our main computer. When it still came up with the £1million win I called Bill down to take a look and we both agreed that we probably ought to call Camelot.”
Once Camelot had been called and the win confirmed, Bill and Josie called their two children who were just as surprised but equally delighted that the win would mean a secure retirement for their parents.
“Bill and I have been in rented accommodation for more than 20 years,” said Josie, “and while we were looking forward to our retirement we were a bit nervous about renting while on a pension. So much so, Bill, who has been in maintenance at the same firm for 16 years, was planning to continue for a few more years beyond retirement age to help ease things.
“Now look at us. If you’d told me this time last week Bill would be handing in his notice and we’d be house hunting I’d think you were mad.”
For the couple who have been married for 37 years, the adventure doesn’t stop with a new home and early retirement. A new car is on the lottery winners' shopping list, as is helping out family and an upgraded cruise.
“We had been saving up to go on a cruise next year but ever since the win Bill’s been joking about how we can splash out on a balcony room as opposed to the boiler room we were likely to have been in!”
